The subproject Recovery of Degraded Areas in the Marechal Cândido Mariano Rondon Biological Reserve and Training of Community Brigades – Miranda (Mato Grosso do Sul) aims to carry out the restoration of 32 hectares of anthropized area, located inside the Marechal Cândido Mariano Rondon Municipal Biological Reserve (REBIO), through different restoration techniques. In addition, promote the training of a community brigade to fight fires inside and around Protected Areas (PAs) and other forest remnants together with the surrounding communities.

As a first measure, a Recovery Plan for the degraded area will be drawn up, which should contain the initial mapping of the entire area to be worked on, with the identification and demarcation of the anthropized areas suitable for restoration, and the mapping of the PA’s surroundings to verify the forest density and consequently the accumulation of combustible material. The subproject will mobilize residents of local communities, so that they become capable of contributing to the recovery process of the degraded areas of the Protected Area during the execution of the project and in the long term.

Based on the restoration plan, the process of recovering the degraded areas located inside the PA will begin, with different previously established methods, considering the characteristics of the locations to choose the most appropriate method. The restoration process of the degraded areas will be monitored, to guarantee that the restoration is ongoing and that, if necessary, appropriate measures are taken.

Residents around the PA will be trained and will receive materials to form community brigades to carry out the activities of the contingency plan for fire risks inside and around the reserve, as well as other private areas.
