REM MATO GROSSO

back

Launched at Rio+20 in 2012, the Global REDD Early Movers (REM) Program is a results-based compensation initiative for environmental services made possible by both the Governments of Germany and the United Kingdom. It rewards nations committed to reducing CO2 emissions through forest conservation efforts. REM contributes to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) signed at Rio 92. So far Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador have already benefited. In Brazil, the state of Acre was the first to receive resources from the Global program.

At the end of 2017, the state of Mato Grosso (MT) also began to benefit from REM, as it promoted a reduction of more than 90% in deforestation in forests in the period between 2004 and 2014. The so-called REM MT has already guaranteed around €44 million from the Government of Germany through the German Development Bank (KfW) and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland through the Secretariat for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The resources will be made available according to the results of the reduction in deforestation for the reference years from 2015 to 2019, throughout the 4-year term of the Program. The state will only receive the amounts if it keeps deforestation below the line of 1788 km2/year. Funbio is the financial and operational manager of the initiative.

The resources will be distributed as follows, 60% to subprograms for (A) family farming of traditional peoples and communities in the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal, (B) indigenous territories and (C) sustainable production, innovation, and market. The remaining 40% will be allocated to institutional strengthening and structuring the public policies of state government entities and the application and development of public policies.
