The Marine Fund (FM) is a private, long-term financing mechanism established in 2018 with an initial contribution from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The Fund may receive additional resources through agreements with individuals and legal entities in Brazil and abroad.
Its purpose is to support the establishment, expansion, and implementation of a representative and effective system of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MCPAs) in Brazil, while also contributing to biodiversity monitoring, the conservation of marine resources, and stronger governance and sustainable use of coastal and marine zones.
In its original design, the FM was structured to support the expansion and maintenance of the MCPA system, based on previously established rules and guidelines, ensuring continued funding over time through an endowment portfolio.
From 2024 onward, the Fund’s scope was expanded in response to the need to assess the effectiveness of these areas, taking into account the influence of human activities in surrounding areas. The expanded scope includes monitoring biodiversity and living marine resources, as well as initiatives focused on governance and the sustainable use of marine and coastal zones, both within and outside MCPAs. These activities are supported through the Fund’s sinking fund portfolio.
