Guardians of the Cerrado: Community Fire Brigade Network of the Bordolândia Sustainable Development Project

back

Lead institution: Associação Agroecológica Caminho da Paz – ACAMPAZ

The project seeks to structure, strengthen, and, where necessary, enhance community fire brigades dedicated to wildfire prevention and response within the Bordolândia Sustainable Development Project (PDS Bordolândia). The settlement is located approximately 40 kilometers from the municipality of Novo Santo Antônio, in proximity to the Araguaia State Park. Under the Sustainable Development Plan of the PDS Bordolândia Settlement (2010), the area was designated with a legal reserve totaling 45,025.827 hectares.

The project’s specific objectives are to:

1. Build the technical capacity of the existing community fire brigade in Integrated Fire Management, wildfire prevention, and suppression.

2. Provide the brigade with essential equipment and vehicles, ensuring operational readiness.

3. Promote environmental education and awareness among local producers, with a focus on conserving protected areas and strengthening agroecological production practices that eliminate the use of fire.

4. Establish an effective communication network and monitoring system to support early detection and rapid response to wildfire incidents.
Targets:

• Train at least 12 volunteers in wildfire prevention, suppression, and Integrated Fire Management.
• Procure essential firefighting equipment, including a water tanker trailer for wildfire response, personal protective equipment (PPE), and related tools.
• Implement three community-based education campaigns focused on fire prevention practices and environmental conservation.
• Engage an agronomic consultancy to build producers’ capacity in fire-free agricultural management, with an emphasis on sustainable and agroecological practices.

By the end of the project, community fire brigades are expected to be strengthened and fully prepared to act effectively in wildfire prevention and response, alongside a more informed and engaged local population. This strengthened structure will contribute to environmental sustainability and to the protection of protected areas across the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in the municipalities of Serra Nova Dourada and Bom Jesus do Araguaia, within the PDS Bordolândia.
