This project is led by the Fundação Neotrópica do Brasil in partnership with the Instituto Terra Brasilis de Desenvolvimento Socioambiental (ITB) and Serra da Bodoquena National Park. It aims to contribute to the reduction of wildfires in areas surrounding the park that threaten the integrity of this protected area.
With a planned duration of 24 months, the proposal pursues the following specific objectives:
1. Equip and train four community fire brigades operating in communities located around Serra da Bodoquena National Park.
2. Promote environmental education focused on conservation-oriented agricultural practices, with the objective of reducing reliance on fire.
3. Map the park’s buffer zone to identify areas with accumulated combustible material, plan access routes and firebreaks, and define contingency actions for wildfire response in adjacent areas.
4. Install a real-time monitoring tower equipped with a high-resolution camera, along with a situation room integrated into the Serra da Bodoquena monitoring system, which also includes three additional monitoring towers currently being installed in the Kadiwéu Indigenous Land, expanding monitoring coverage to more than half a million hectares.
5. Monitor wildfire hotspots during critical periods using geospatial platforms to support rapid response and decision-making.
