Floresta Viva’s overall objective is to contribute to investments in ecological restoration in Brazilian biomes, consequently achieving benefits related to preserving biodiversity, water resource availability, reducing erosion, improving the microclimate, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and generating jobs and income.

The specific objectives of Floresta Viva are:

  1. a) Strengthen ecological restoration production chains in Brazil;
  2. b) Promote professional training in activities in the ecological restoration production chain;
  3. c) Consolidate efficient structures for the management and execution of ecological restoration aiming to increase its scale and raise new and vaster resources;
  4. d) Promote economic alternatives linked to investments in ecological restoration;
  5. e) Develop carbon certification processes, with increased scale and cost reduction, in sets of ecological restoration projects.

Floresta Viva operates under the combination of resources from the BNDES Socio-Environmental Fund with funds from supporting institutions. Supporting institutions are companies, private foundations and associations, legal entities governed by public law, or indirect public administration entities. Together with BNDES, they participate in Floresta Viva, providing resources for the execution of restoration subprojects.

The initiative’s goal is to invest R$500 million over 7 years, with up to 50% of resources from BNDES.

FUNBIO is the managing partner and responsible for organizing and conducting the selection, contracting, monitoring, and follow-up of restoration project results. They are awarded through public selection and/or structured funding.
