Created by the Pará State Government in 2019, the Eastern Amazon Fund (Fundo da Amazônia Oriental-FAO) is an innovative private funding mechanism based upon collaborations designed to strengthen public policy and social initiatives focused on the environment and development statewide, and to achieve that in a lasting way, with special emphasis on commitments Pará has already assumed all the way to 2036.
By 2025, the initiative aims to mobilize private funding for investment in actions related to the Amazon Now State Plan, such as as curbing deforestation, making Pará’s economy more carbon-free, recomposing the forests, and investing in such assets as the state’s bioeconomy and capacity to provide environmental services. In 2021, the Pará State Government selected FUNBIO to raise funds, manage the program and render all FAO accounts.
