GEF MAR 2

back

Established to carry forward the mission of GEF MAR 1, the Conservation of the Health and Integrity of Brazil’s Coastal and Marine Ecosystems project, GEF MAR 2, was signed in July 2025. Its objective is to ensure the financial sustainability of marine and coastal protected areas, safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem services across more than 14 million hectares distributed among 28 protected areas. Running until 2030, the project provides for a total investment of US$14.3 million (equivalent to more than R$77 million at the current exchange rate), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

These funds will be invested in expanding efforts to protect, connect, and manage Brazil’s coastal and marine environments by strengthening and developing protected areas; consolidating financing, capacity-building, and management strategies; supporting community projects; improving biodiversity monitoring; and implementing innovative technologies to ensure the sustainable use of marine resources.

Still in the structuring and planning phase, the program’s activities are expected to begin in 2026.

Technical coordination of GEF MAR 2 is provided by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), with management and execution by FUNBIO.
