The aim of the initiative is to engage institutions and traditional communities, especially artisanal fisherpeople, in the Amazonian mangroves, an ecosystem that is key to coastal integrity, the sustainability of marine biodiversity, mitigation of climate change and the economic and social welfare of the local populace. Roughly 70% of the country’s mangroves are in the Amazon region.

The project, a FUNBIO initiative in partnership with the ICMBio and funded by the Norwegian government, will take place at the “Amazon Estuary and Mangroves” Ramsar Site (Wetland of International Importance), and at the adjacent sister-sites “Cabo orange National Park”,“Reentrâncias Maranhenses” and “Baixada Maranhense”.
