Institution Responsible: Sertaneja Friends of Nature Organization – SOS SERTÃO
The project aims to maintain and preserve the biodiversity of Furna Feia National Park through a Degraded Areas Recovery Plan with the participation of the local community. The main recovery method will be the planting of native species. The selection of units to be revegetated will be based on the criteria of degradation levels, maximizing the benefits of direct investments in ecosystem restoration actions. The definition of the restoration methodologies for each of the selected units will be based on their potential for self-recovery, which will be identified, characterized and quantified in the field. In addition, some actions will be aimed at environmental education activities and awareness-raising of the surrounding community, aiming at the commitment and participation of the local community in the recovery process. At the end of the project, the areas selected for revegetation will likely reach the expected levels and be self-sustainable, without the need for human intervention, and that the training and awareness-raising activities will contribute to bringing the local community closer to sustainably managing these ecosystems, as recommended by the UN’s 2030 Agenda with its commitment to sustainable cities and communities.
