Institution responsible: Association of the Karipuna Indigenous People
Project summary: To improve territorial protection of the Uaçá and Juminã Indigenous Lands through autonomous indigenous surveillance and monitoring initiatives. The project aims to mobilize indigenous representatives from the five regions of Oiapoque to agree on joint action strategies.
Frequent surveillance and monitoring expeditions will be carried out to maintain the dry boundaries of the demarcation, to mark them with signs and to identify potential invasions. In addition to the expeditions, the project foresees the improvement of the infrastructure of a surveillance post located in one of the most vulnerable places to invasions in the region (especially its energy, communication and accommodation systems). The information gathered by the project on invasions and illegal activities in indigenous territories is expected to contribute to the actions of the agencies responsible for enforcing them. The project also foresees the development of a communication plan that will seek to provide information on the results of the expeditions, contributing to the visibility and strengthening of indigenous surveillance and monitoring strategies within the territories, as well as to their recognition by society more broadly.
One of the key groups for implementing the project are the Indigenous Environmental Agents, young people trained as environmental technicians, who will be in charge of activities in the villages.
