back

Institution Responsible: Associação Caatinga

The project aims to expand and improve the management of legally protected areas in the Caatinga biome of the State of Ceará, specifically in the regions of Sertões de Canindé and Tejuçuoca, as well as the mountainous and slope areas of Serra da Ibiapaba in the municipalities of Viçosa do Ceará, Granja, and Pacujá, which have concerning records of accumulated deforestation.

In pursuit of measures to combat the degradation of Brazil’s exclusively national biome, the project includes the following actions:

  1. Preparation, revision, and updating of studies for the creation of 4 new Proected Areas in the Caatinga biome of the State of Ceará;
  2. Proposal of actions to improve the management of the Parque Estadual das Carnaúbas (PEC), particularly for public use, through the development of a visitation plan and the installation of informational signage.
  3. Development of a Best Practices Manual for forest management and the extraction of carnaúba straw and wax in the surroundings of the Parque Estadual das Carnaúbas (PEC), proposing improvements for the production chain as well as for the communities neighboring the PEC.

The project will last 18 months and will also strive to implement public policies that strengthen conservation efforts in the Caatinga.
