POP ICMBIO

back

The project “Improving Monitoring Strategies and Actions to Reduce Deforestation and
Wildfires in Federal Conservation Areas in the Amazon” (POP ICMBio) will focus on the
region crossed by Highway BR-163 in the Amazon, one of the most threatened areas
of the biome. Some of the greatest challenges faced include illegal deforestation and
illegal mining, as well as land encroachment.

The region contains 12 Federal Conservation Units (UCs) with high deforestation rates,
of which the first nine account for 70% of the observed deforestation: Tapajós APA,
Jamanxim FLONA, Altamira FLONA, Nascentes da Serra do Cachimbo REBIO,
Amanã FLONA, Jamanxim PARNA, Itaituba FLONA, Crepori FLONA, Trairão FLONA,
Amazônia II PARNA, Rio Novo II PARNA, and Itaituba FLONA. The project aims to
improve data availability to combat deforestation and increase ICMBio’s institutional
presence in the region, with the goal of reducing the annual deforestation rate in the
Conservation Units by 30%.

This initiative is supported by the Protecting Our Planet Challenge, with funding from
Re:wild, the Bezos Earth Fund, the Bobolink Foundation, and the Gordon & Betty
Moore Foundation, under the management of FUNBIO.
