Institution Responsible: Northeast Environmental Research Center – CEPAN
The project involves the development of proposals for the creation of six new Protected Areas (PAs) with management plans and financial sustainability strategies in the Caatinga biome of the State of Pernambuco, totaling approximately 8,390 hectares. The new PAs, located in the municipalities of Triunfo (Carro Quebrado), São José do Belmonte (Serra Comprida), Afrânio (Serra Dois Irmãos), Carnaíba (Serra da Matinha), Parnamirim/Santa Maria da Boa Vista/Santa Cruz (Serra da Siriema), and Orocó (Serra dos Almirantes), will have their areas assessed (fauna, flora, physical environment, and socioeconomic characterization) and mapped using geographic information system tools to understand their boundaries and land tenure situation.
The project includes the organization and execution of six workshops, one for each proposed PA, as well as a preliminary suggestion for the basic composition of the management councils, following the methodological guidelines for the creation of Protected Areas.
Throughout the project, educational materials will be produced to raise awareness among the population that will directly or indirectly benefit from the project. Additionally, a training course will be organized for 25 managers directly involved in the management of the PAs, focusing on key topics related to management and financial sustainability plans.
The project will last 18 months and aims, through its technical team and partners, to promote the role of Protected Areas across the State of Pernambuco as agents mitigating desertification boundaries and providing climate regulation for the region.
