Institution Responsible: Society for the Conservation of Birds of Brazil – SAVE BRASIL
The project’s overall objective is to reduce biodiversity degradation in priority areas of native grasslands within the Ibirapuitã Environmental Protection Area (APA) in Rio Grande do Sul (RS). This will be achieved through direct action and prevention of invasion by African lovegrass (Eragrostis plana) and population control of wild boars (Sus scrofa). The first stage of the project involves participatory planning of activities and defining the areas to be restored within the APA. Following the planning stage, a direct restoration plan will be implemented across 1,500 hectares of areas invaded by African lovegrass and 2,250 hectares of areas with wild boar presence.
Simultaneously, the operational model of the Alianza del Pastizal will be expanded to properties located within the APA, aiming to certify 40 new properties under the Alianza. This corresponds to 10,000 hectares of native grasslands conserved through improved management practices. To evaluate the effectiveness of the biodiversity conservation actions, the richness and composition of bird and vegetation (grasses) species will be monitored in the directly restored areas and other partner properties involved in the project.
It is estimated that 80 producers will directly benefit from the project’s actions, while another 700 will benefit indirectly, considering only the area within the APA.
